Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg is getting a lot of attention for recently saying that e-mail may become obsolete.

Of course, the death of e-mail has been predicted before: By the Wall Street Journal in 2009, by blogs like this one in 2008, by Slate in 2007, by articles like this one in 2006.

As you can see by this chart, social media usage has surpassed that of e-mail, but the trend line for e-mail is still on the rise.

So the answer is clearly: no, e-mail is not becoming obsolete. Articles about the impending death of e-mail, though, are.
