AOL CTO: CYA

August 22nd, 2006

another day in AOHell

Reuters reported midday yesterday that Maureen Govern, “who oversaw the division responsible for accidentally releasing search data for more than a half a millions users, has resigned from the company.” C|Net adds that two additional employees have been fired.

This came on the same day that found the New York Times editorializing that the “Electronic Frontier Foundation has filed a complaint against AOL, arguing that the recent well-publicized release of search data from 600,000 AOL customers was a deceptive trade practice. The F.T.C. should uphold the complaint, and send a clear message that invasions of privacy of this sort will be punished.”

Will Govern’s sudden inability to govern as CTO and the dismissal of a duo of researchers quiet the angry mob staked out in front of the AOL castle with flaming torches, or are these just the first three of many heads to roll?
