Due To High Workload …

Put email on hold so you can deal with ...

I received the following response yesterday to an email:

Due to high workload, I am currently checking and responding to email twice daily at 11 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. PST. If you require immediate assistance, please call my assistant [name/number] or email our assistant editor [name/address]. Thank you for understanding this move to increase my efficiency and effectiveness. It allows me to accomplish more and serve you better.

I wonder how many of us who live and die by the inbox would be comfortable attempting such a thing.

I think this is a brilliant thing to do. I’m a web developer, so I do live and die by the inbox, but I know what a time eater it can be – you’re working on a project and accomplishing a lot, then here comes an e-mail that you stop to answer because it’s a quick and easy question to handle, then here’s another one, and all of a sudden it’s 4 hours later and you have nothing to show for the time. I’ve moved to having Outlook only check for messages once per hour and that has helped me be more efficient, but I am going to try this guy’s autoresponder and see how my clients react!
