Tweets From Hell

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Okay, one more Osama bin Laden humor post because … well, because it’s been that kind of week.

Someone has registered this Twitter account and is tweeting as bin Laden from Hell. There’s some pretty funny stuff in there, but fair warning: There’s some pretty edgy stuff in there you might find offensive. So far, Osama has more than 10,000 followers — with many more to come, I’m sure.

The joke may get old quickly, but so far it’s pretty good. The only thing I find irritating about it is that I didn’t think of it first.

Tower of Babble

Now that this blog has been listed in the Cision database for a while, I’m receiving all kinds of interesting pitches on a regular basis, though I find them interesting for reasons that are probably a lot different than those who send them to me might hope.

Yesterday, for example, I received a release from ShoutOmatic with the headline, “Stop Typing and Start Shouting!” The lead paragraph is as follows:

Los Angeles, CA – April 28, 2011 — ShoutOmatic, a revolutionary Facebook, Twitter and Iphone app, is changing the world of social media by allowing users to vocally record and broadcast status updates, wall posts, and tweets. ShoutOmatic allows you to record and post, “audible status updates” (Shouts) so your Voice can be heard in your Twitter and Facebook feeds adding authenticity, emotion and tonality. Virtual emotions are no long confined to emoticons, punctuation, and 140 characters –“shout” your updates with ShoutOmatic and never lose tone, emotion or authenticity in social media again.

I found this interesting only because of the horrifying image it creates should the idea of “audible status updates” catch on. You know how fast that Twitter feed of yours scrolls by? Now imagine all of that … stuff … assaulting your ears. Talk about a signal-to-noise ratio!

Which is not to say there might not be totally appropriate uses for ShoutOmatic: a brand disseminating a new ringtone, for example, or a band sharing snippets of new music. But I fear those appropriate uses will be — well, shouted down by the roar of the crowd.

But hey — one never knows. Once the technology gets out there, people may figure out a cool way of using it that no one involved in creating it ever anticipated.
