On this day in 1918, Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car in the forest of Compiègne, France. The fighting officially ended at 11 a.m — the eleventh hour in the eleventh month on the eleventh day. In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. On October 8, 1954, President Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation.
